Every year, GI Jobs releases a Top Military-Friendly Schools list commemorating military-friendly colleges and universities across the United States. Many schools were recognized in GI Jobs Top Military-Friendly Schools of 2010, a prestige in the military education community.
In order to make the cut for the GI Jobs magazine’s list, honorary schools must be in the top 15% of all colleges, universities, and trade schools nationwide for America’s military veteran, reserve, and active duty students.
This is just the beginning of GI Jobs determining an university as a military-friendly school, though. Part of the criteria for making the Military-Friendly Schools of 2010 list includes efforts to not only recruit military and veteran students, but to retain them throughout their educational career; this consistency demonstrates satisfaction in the military education programs.
Schools on the list also must offer additional benefits to veteran, reserve, and active duty students, including on-campus veteran programs, credits for service, military spouse programs, and more. Lastly, the list mandates that all schools have accreditation.
A military friendly college is important for military personnel. Features of a military college that are useful often include:
* Flexibility – these schools understand that those in the military need time for their duties, so classes and homework have increased flexibility for military students.
* Financial Aid – military friendly colleges often have a multitude of aid specific for those in the military. Specialized programs such as the Military Spouse Scholarship, Post 9/11 GI Bill, and Active Duty Benefits provide much needed funds to students.
* Online Education – military friendly schools often provide online education options to those in the military – this is important since many military students are in bases that are scattered all over the world.
The GI Jobs magazine’s Top Military-Friendly Schools of 2010 will be published in September 2009. “This list is especially important now because the recently enacted Post-9/11 GI Bill has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they are academically qualified. So schools are clamoring around for them like never before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”
Hawai’i Pacific University was honored as a GI Jobs Military Friendly School for 2009.
